How to gain followers using comment to DM automation

By , founder of PhysioDesk ยท ยท 9 min read

You gain followers with comment to DM automation in two ways. First, a keyword offer (comment PLAN and get the plan in your DMs) gives people a reason to comment, and more comments help your post reach people who don't follow you yet. Second, you can ask people to follow you before the DM sends them the link, so some of those commenters become followers on the spot.

The automation only makes sure nobody waits. The offer, and the content people find when they land on your profile, decide whether they follow and whether they stay. This guide shows you how to set up both parts.

Why comment to DM automation brings in new followers

Most people who watch your Reel never follow. They watch, maybe like it, and scroll on. A line like follow for more rarely changes that, because it asks for something without giving anything back.

Comment-to-DM changes the ask. Instead of follow for more, you say: comment NECK and I'll DM you the 7-day routine. That's a small, specific action with a clear reward, and it works on a phone in two seconds.

When it's set up well, three things happen:

  • More comments on the post. Comments are an engagement signal, and engagement is one of the things Instagram looks at when deciding how widely to show a post. More reach means more non-followers see your Reel and tap through to your profile.
  • Visible public replies. The automation can reply under each comment with something like Sent, check your DMs. People reading the comments see that it actually works, so they add their own.
  • A follow at the moment of interest. With a follower check switched on, the person is asked to follow before they get the link. They already want the thing, so following feels like a small step.

The third gives you direct follows. The first two give you reach, which only turns into follows if your profile looks worth following. Keep that in mind before you build anything: automation can bring people to the door, but your feed is what makes them come in.

What you need before you start

Get these sorted first, or the setup will stall halfway.

  1. An Instagram Business or Creator account. Personal accounts can't use any comment-to-DM automation, from any tool. If you're not sure which one to pick, read Business or Creator account for Instagram DM automation.
  2. A post built around a keyword. Reels usually reach the most non-followers, but photo posts and carousels work too.
  3. Something worth sending. A PDF, a price list, a booking link, a free class link, a checklist, a template. If you wouldn't comment for it yourself, others won't either.
  4. A tool that uses Meta's official API. It should connect through Instagram Login. Any tool that asks for your Instagram password is putting your account at risk.

Meta also sets rules that apply to every tool, free or paid:

  • One automatic private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment.
  • After that first DM, you can send more messages only within 24 hours of the person replying or tapping a button.
  • Meta's published limit is 750 private replies an hour per account.

These rules shape how the flow below is built. There's more detail in the Instagram comment-to-DM rules Meta actually enforces.

How to gain followers with comment to DM automation, step by step

Here is the flow that turns a commenter into a follower. The screens differ a little between tools, but the steps are the same.

  1. Choose the post. Pick an existing post, or set the automation for the next post you publish, so it's already live when the first comments come in.
  2. Pick the keyword. One short word that's easy to type on a phone, like PLAN, MENU or PRICE. Most tools match the keyword anywhere in the comment and in any case, so plan pls, PLAN and Plan do bhai all count.
  3. Add words to ignore. Skip comments containing words like refund, complaint or fraud. An upset customer should get a human reply, not a cheerful automated DM.
  4. Write the first DM with a button. Keep it short and warm, and put the action on the button (for example, Send my plan). The button matters: once the person taps it, Meta's 24-hour window opens and you can send the next message.
  5. Switch on the follower check. When someone taps the button, they're asked to follow you before the link arrives. This is the step that turns interest into a follow.
  6. Write the final message with the link. Deliver exactly what you promised, plus one line telling them what else they'll get by following.
  7. Add a few public replies. Rotate three or four short replies under comments so the comment section doesn't look like a bot wrote it.
  8. Test it from a second account. Comment the keyword, tap the button, check the follow step and open the link. Fix anything that feels clunky before the Reel goes up.

If you want a free tool for this, PhysioDesk Funnels does every step above on its free forever plan: 1 Instagram account, 10 active automations and up to 190 first DMs an hour, with extra comments queued rather than dropped. The limits are listed on the free plan and pricing page. For the setup itself in more detail, see how to auto-reply to Instagram comments with a DM.

What to offer so people actually want to follow

The follower check gets you a follow. The offer decides whether that person stays. A good rule: the DM should feel like a sample of what following you gets them, not the whole meal.

Here are ideas for different kinds of accounts:

Account Post idea Keyword What the DM sends Why they'd keep following
Physio clinic in Ahmedabad Reel: 3 stretches for desk neck pain NECK 7-day routine PDF and booking link A new short exercise every week
Home baker in Pune Reel: decorating an eggless chocolate cake MENU Festive menu with prices in โ‚น and order link New flavours and order dates
Fitness coach Carousel: 4-week beginner home workout PLAN Workout plan as a Google Sheet Daily form tips and progress checks
Clothing shop Reel: new kurti collection try-on PRICE Catalogue link with prices First look at new drops
Excel trainer Reel: one shortcut that saves 10 minutes SHEET Free practice template More shortcuts every week

Notice the last column. Each offer points to a reason to stay. If your DM gives away everything and your feed has nothing more, people follow for the link and quietly unfollow a week later.

If you run a clinic, how physiotherapy clinics can turn Instagram comments into patients goes further on offers that lead to bookings, not just follows.

Say the follow part upfront

If your Reel says comment PLAN for the PDF, and then the DM asks for a follow, some people feel baited. Put it in the caption or on screen instead:

Follow and comment PLAN, I'll DM you the full 4-week plan.

People who comment after reading that already agreed to follow. Fewer drop off at the follow step, and fewer unfollow later.

Keywords and DM scripts you can copy

A few rules for keywords:

  • Use one word that's specific to the post. NECK, MENU, PLAN. Avoid common words like nice, yes or wow, because anywhere-matching will trigger on ordinary comments like nice video.
  • Watch for words inside words. With anywhere-matching, PLAN also matches planning. If that's a problem, switch on whole-word matching.
  • Hinglish is fine. If your audience writes link do, details pls or price kya hai, choose a keyword that fits how they already type.

First DM examples

For a physio clinic:

Hi! Thanks for commenting on our neck pain Reel ๐Ÿ™‚ Tap below and I'll send you the 7-day routine.

Button: Send routine

For a home baker, in Hinglish:

Hii! Festive menu ready hai ๐ŸŽ‚ Neeche button dabao, abhi bhej rahe hain.

Button: Menu bhejo

For a fitness coach:

Hey! Your 4-week plan is ready ๐Ÿ’ช Tap below to get it.

Button: Get my plan

Keep button text short. Most tools cap it (PhysioDesk Funnels allows up to 20 characters), and short buttons are easier to tap anyway.

Mistakes that cost you followers

Most accounts that try this and see little growth make one of these mistakes.

  • Follow-gating every post. If every Reel demands a follow, your existing followers get nothing new and newcomers start to feel like they're being sold to. Save the follower check for your best offers.
  • A weak offer. A generic 5 tips PDF won't move anyone. A specific routine, a real price list or a working template will.
  • A mismatch between offer and feed. Someone follows for a cake menu and then sees motivational quotes. They'll leave. The offer should match what you actually post.
  • Ignoring people who reply. People often reply to the DM with a question like is this okay for slip disc too. That reply opens a new 24-hour window. Answer it yourself. That conversation builds more trust than the PDF does.
  • A keyword that fires on normal comments. You end up DMing people who never asked, which looks spammy and annoys them.
  • Turning it on after the Reel has peaked. Set it up before you post, using the next post you publish option, so early commenters aren't left waiting.

Also expect some unfollows. A few people will follow only for the link and leave. That's normal. Watch your net growth over a few weeks, not one day.

How to tell if it's working

Track a handful of numbers for each post you run this on: comments, first DMs sent, button taps, new follows and unfollows over the following week. Instagram's post insights show how many follows came from a post, and your automation tool should show who commented and tapped. In PhysioDesk Funnels, the leads list shows the post and keyword each person came from, and you can export it as a CSV.

Then read the numbers like this:

What you see What it usually means What to change
Lots of views, few comments The offer isn't clear or tempting Say the keyword on screen and in the caption, sharpen the offer
Lots of comments, few button taps The first DM is weak or confusing Shorter DM, clearer button text
Lots of taps, few follows People didn't expect the follow step Mention following upfront in the Reel
Good follows, many unfollows later Offer doesn't match your regular content Choose offers that preview what you post

Change one thing at a time, so you know what made the difference.

What comment-to-DM automation can't do

It's worth being honest about the limits. Automation can't make a dull Reel interesting, and it can't keep people who don't enjoy your feed. It also can't break Meta's rules: one automatic reply per comment, and follow-up messages only inside the 24-hour window.

Tools also differ in what they cover. PhysioDesk Funnels, for example, handles comment-to-DM on Reels, photo posts and carousels, with a button, a follower check and a final link. It does not do Story reply automation, broadcasts, AI-written replies, Facebook or WhatsApp automation, or longer multi-step flows. If you need those, you'll need a different or additional tool.

For gaining followers, though, the simple flow is usually enough: a clear keyword, a useful offer, a polite follow ask and a fast DM.

Your next step

Pick one Reel you're posting this week. Decide the one thing you'll DM people, write the keyword on screen with a follow and comment line, and set the automation to run on the next post you publish.
