Business or Creator account? Which one you need for Instagram DM automation

To automate Instagram DMs through Instagram's official API, your account has to be a professional account. Instagram has two kinds: Business and Creator. Personal accounts can't use the messaging API at all.
The good news: for comment-to-DM automation, both work equally well. The choice comes down to everything else you do on Instagram.
How to switch from a personal account
- Open your profile and tap the menu (☰).
- Go to Settings and activity → Account type and tools.
- Tap Switch to professional account.
- Pick a category, then choose Creator or Business.
It's free, it doesn't delete anything, and you can switch between Business and Creator later.
Creator accounts
Built for people whose account is about them: influencers, coaches, educators, artists, doctors and physios building a personal brand.
- Flexible profile display options
- Creator-focused tools such as branded content and partnership features
- Insights on followers and content
Pick Creator if the account is you, your face and your expertise.
Business accounts
Built for brands, shops, clinics and companies.
- Contact buttons on your profile (call, email, directions)
- Instagram Shop and product tagging, where available
- Closer ties to Meta's business tools, such as ads and Meta Business Suite
- Insights on followers and content
Pick Business if the account represents a clinic, shop or company rather than a person.
Does the choice affect DM automation?
No. Both account types:
- receive comment notifications through the API;
- can send the one private reply to a comment;
- can send button messages and follow-ups within the 24-hour window;
- work the same in PhysioDesk Funnels.
The rules that matter for automation, like one private reply per comment and the 24-hour window, are the same for both. They're explained in the rules Meta enforces.
A quick recommendation
| You are… | Choose |
|---|---|
| A coach, creator, educator or individual practitioner | Creator |
| A clinic, shop, brand or agency account | Business |
| Not sure | Creator. You can switch to Business later in seconds |
Once your account is professional, you can connect it and set up your first comment-to-DM automation in about five minutes.
